Why Volunteer

CAAWS is run solely by unpaid volunteers and 100% of the monies received in donations go towards helping our animals or back into our community through our outreach programs. The majority of our volunteers work or go to school full time. We are always looking for more dedicated volunteers to join our team. Below are ways that you can get involved. Please complete the online application form to learn more and become a volunteer.

Dog Shift
A dog shift consists of feeding, medicating, letting out, cleaning up after, and playing with our CAAWS dogs.

Cat Shift
A cat shift consists of feeding the cats, scooping/dumping litter, general cleaning, and the joy of playing with the CAAWS cats and kittens.

CAAWS relies on the volunteers who give their time, love and home to our foster animals. If you have a little space in your home and a lot of love in your heart, become a foster parent. Learn more on our Foster Program page.

We need help both at our building for dogs and transporting the animals to offsite adoption locations when applicable. We would need help setting up the tables and cages. You would work with adoption counselors to keep the animals happy and safe, greet the public and answer their questions. You can come for the full day or a partial day. We do ask that if you commit to a day you do attend on that day but there is not a weekly commitment as with other opportunities.

Humane Education
Our Humane Education Volunteers go to elementary school classes with CAAWS dogs to teach responsible pet ownership, spay and neuter, and child safety. Our presentations usually last from 45 minutes to an hour. If we go to a school that wants us to talk to several classes, then it might take up to 3 hours. During the summer months, we give presentations at several libraries. We always need people to assist with the props, handle the CAAWS dog, or do a presentation. All teaching materials will be provided for you, and no training is necessary.

Pet Touch Therapy
Our volunteers visit local retirement communities/nursing homes and other facilities with their personal pets. For more information and how to volunteer for this please see our Pet Touch Therapy page.

Special Events Committee
There are many ways in which we need help with events. We need help brainstorming on events to have, events to attend, and events to coordinate. We need help planning, advertising, getting the details hammered down and taken care of, posted everywhere. We need help staffing events and setting up and breaking down, as well as staffing an informational table at several venues. Events both big and small.

Fundraising Committee
As a non-profit, we can provide only as much help as we can afford to, and that’s where you’ll come in. Do you know how to raise money? Are you good at organizing and networking, approaching sponsors to bring the into partnership with us? Do you think you can help us by working together with our Events Committee and Public Relations Committee to seek out new, untapped resources?

There are many ways in which we need help with things like organization, excel spreadsheets, tracking, information gathering, data entry, phone call returns, supply ordering, and etc. If you would like to help us but are unable to due to time constraints or physical disability there may be openings for you “behind the scenes”.

Are you obsessed with the newest trends in marketing? Do you have an interest or background in developing in written marketing materials? CAAWS is looking for volunteers to help us with our marketing, public relations, and communications! As a volunteer, you will get to work with a variety of real projects that will help us grow. Our ideal candidate is someone who is an animal lover of all kinds and someone who is obsessed with marketing, public relations, and communications and is creative and thoughtful when interacting with online communities, written communications, and building relationships.
